As the Couto Brothers, we have made art since we were babies. We only started creating this ‘style’ recently and we have been doing it for us and the world. Our work is organic and colorful bringing in many the worlds cultures together, bridging the gap between western and non-western. The shapes and colors can sometimes be abstract and often figurative. We are also very tuned in with what is going on in the world and throughout humankind’s history. We like to push the envelope and have others think about a certain topic or idea but also portraying animals and life. We attract the viewer with the colors and once we get them to that point we allow them to see things from our perspective. We enjoy touching on social topics and topics that many find difficult to discuss. (ex: “The Middle Passage” portraying 16th century slavery). In case of such pieces as the gun (“.38″) we understand this image as being one of the most widely recognizable images throughout the world and also one of the most popular weapons used in American crime.
