"26 Characters"

Saturday, March 13th, GO Gallery opens with a spectacular show by Dutch artist, Michiel van der Born, a cum laude graduate from The Royal Academy in The Hague. Michiel who studied typography will present a series of artworks titled "26 Characters".

Michiel van der Born (1975), studied at The Royal Academy for Fine Arts in the Hague.
It was here that Michiel first came in contact with the complex and interesting world behind every letter. During the course of his studies, he read up on typography and and type design and thus began to look at "letters" with a new perspective. Besides reading them, he put every letter through a thorough inspection.
Letters have been designed as a family and have relatives too.
Some can be thin or fat, some have feet , many have eyes and ears ( for eg. the rounded bit on the g). A few have tails, like the p's and the q's. The b has a belly and the n has a shoulder and often one speaks of the feet or the paws in a m.
Letters can be friendly or strict , outspoken or even subservient.
By giving the letters a skin and an environment. they develop into proper charcters, hence "26 Characters"!
Corresponding to the 26 letters in the alphabet, Michiel has created 26 paintings and 4 art-prints (limited editon of 15 for each) and a series of original sketches and a tile with a dutch text in gothic letters.
The show "26 Characters" will be on display until the 9th of May 2010.
